What Actually Triggers a Reality Check

Posted on September 7, 2026September 8, 2026 by The Slot Insider

You’ve probably had a session interrupted by a screen that stops the game, shows how long you’ve been playing and whether you’re up or down, and makes you click something before you continue. Enough sites describe this as happening “every 30, 60, or 90 minutes” that I assumed there was a specific number written into Ontario’s rules somewhere. So I went and actually read the AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming — the current published version — to find that number.

It isn’t there.

What the standards actually say

Two provisions cover this territory, and neither one specifies a pop-up or a timer interval.

Standard 2.21 says that for slots games, “gaming sessions must clearly display a customer’s net position — the total of all winnings minus the sum of all losses since the start of the session — in Canadian dollars.” That’s a requirement to keep your net result visible. It doesn’t say how often, or in what format, or whether it has to interrupt anything.

Standard 2.22 says: “Players shall have the means to track the passage of time.” That’s the entire requirement. No specified interval. No mandated interruption. No instruction that it has to be a pop-up at all.

There’s also Standard 2.08, which requires operators to make general responsible-gambling information available — including how their tools work — but again, it doesn’t dictate that the tool has to be a timed interrupt screen or specify when one should fire.

Why the rule is written that way

This isn’t a gap or an oversight. The AGCO’s own framework explains the approach right at the top of the standards document: the whole model is built around “regulatory outcomes” rather than prescriptive mechanics, specifically so that operators have flexibility in how they meet a requirement rather than being handed a single mandated implementation. The outcome here is that a player can see their net position and track how much time has passed. How an operator delivers that is left up to them.

In practice, that means a site could technically satisfy both standards with an always-visible running clock and an always-visible net-position tally in a corner of the screen, and never once interrupt play with a pop-up. Other sites choose the interrupting version — possibly because it’s a familiar convention from other jurisdictions that do mandate a specific timed interrupt, possibly because it’s just considered a more effective way to actually get a player’s attention than a number sitting quietly in the corner. Both approaches can be compliant with what Ontario’s rule text actually asks for.

The honest answer

If you’ve been assuming there’s a regulatory stopwatch counting down to a legally required interruption at the 60-minute mark, there isn’t one — at least not written into the Standards themselves. What’s specifically required is narrower and more flexible than that: your net position and elapsed time have to stay knowable to you, one way or another, for the whole session. The reality check screen you’ve probably seen is one operator’s chosen way of doing that. It’s a legitimate and useful tool either way — just not the specific, numbered rule a lot of casino-review pages describe it as.

Slots are entertainment, not income, and no amount of research or experience changes the math underneath the game. The Responsible Gambling page has more on that, along with support options in Ontario if you ever want them.
